Mixed dentition | Information from A to Z

The change from baby teeth to permanent teeth takes place in two stages. The early mixed dentition develops with the eruption of the six-year molars between ages 5 to 9. During this first stage, the four upper and lower incisors are replaced. In the following interim period of between one and two years both dental arches hold both baby and permanent teeth. From age 9 to 13 the transition to permanent dentition continues with the late mixed dentition. During this stage the baby canines and molars are replaced by adult teeth. The phase of permanent dentition commences with the eruption of the last permanent tooth, the second molar (excepting the third molars or wisdom teeth). Orthodontic treatment usually takes place in the late mixed dentition stage.
