| The chewing, lip and tongue muscles influence the position of the teeth and jaw. If teeth are not properly aligned, a speech impediment may result, or the patient may experience great difficulty in closing his or her lips. If, for example, the tongue keeps thrusting against the teeth when swallowing, they will move or tilt. We therefore work very closely with several speech therapists in order to achieve an improvement in articulation and speech, and to create balance in the orofacial system (facial and chewing muscles), e.g. achieving mouth closure, correcting and stabilising the position of the tongue at rest, and correcting faulty swallowing patterns and the resulting disorders of mouth, jaw and facial muscles. |
