These facial disorders are characterised by muscular imbalance, predominantly in the tongue and lip muscles, but also affecting other facial muscles. Typical signs are an open mouth, an interdental rest position of the tongue, an open bite, and protrusion of the tongue during swallowing (tongue thrusting, visceral swallowing pattern, and a protrusion of the tongue between the upper and lower front and/or back teeth). |
