Archwires | Information from A to Z

The archwire is part of a fixed orthodontic appliance. It is the active element of the multi-band appliance, moving wrongly placed teeth back into the dental arch. At the start of treatment, when teeth are not aligned properly, the archwire is deformed when it is attached to the brackets. It then tries to return to its original shape, thereby applying pressure to the brackets and thus the teeth. In the first stage of treatment, the wires are thin and very elastic in order to avoid too strong a pressure on the teeth. Subsequently, stronger, stiffer archwires are used, enabling finer control over tooth movement.
